"Tell It Out with Gladness"

The famous female hymnist, Fanny Crosby, wrote the words to “Tell It Out with Gladness.” It was published in a hymnal called Redemption Songs in 1889. Crosby, blinded from the age of six months, never allowed her blindness to interfere with her love for God or delivering his message of hope to the world. Her grandmother, a devout Christian, reared her because her widowed mother had to work. She told others that she was glad she was blind and that she would be so excited to get to heaven where the first face she would see would be her Lord.
John R. Sweney wrote the melody for “Tell It Out with Gladness.” Sweney’s musical career began at an early age when he began to teach public school music. By 19, he was studying piano and violin under Professor Bauer, a German music teacher. Three years later, he was the Third Delaware Regiment’s band leader during the American Civil War. That led to his becoming music professor at Pennsylvania Military Academy where he worked for over 25 years. His music teams up with the female hymnist Crosby’s words to make a beautiful combo.
“Tell It Out with Gladness”
Are you happy in the Lord, Tell it out with gladness; Are you trusting in His Word, Tell it out with gladness; If a Savior’s love you feel, Can your soul its power conceal? To the world your joy reveal, Tell it out with gladness.
Refrain
Tell it out, tell it out with gladness, Tell it out, tell it out with gladness, Tell the world the joy you feel, Tell it out, tell it out with gladness.
Are you walking in the light, Tell it out with gladness; Is your hope of glory bright, Tell it out with gladness; Have you perfect peace within, Are you trying still to win Constant victory over sin, Tell it out with gladness.
Refrain
Do you love the place of prayer, Tell it out with gladness; Do you find a blessing there, Tell it out with gladness; While your thoughts on Jesus dwell, Does your soul with rapture swell? Can you say that all is well? Tell it out with gladness.
Refrain
“Tell It Out with Gladness” is a song about the happiness of being a Christian and the overflow of joy that makes us want to tell others. Fanny Crosby, the blind hymnist, did just that.
