Hymns and gospel songs - stories

"Tell It Out"

Frances R. Havergal (1836-1879) wrote the words to the Evangelical song, “Tell It Out” in 1872 one day when she could not attend church.  She had taken her prayer book to her room upstairs to follow along with the readings for the service that day and read the Psalm for the day, which was “Tell it out among the nations that the Lord is king.”  The passage so inspired her that she went downstairs and began to play a tune and write a song based on it, and that’s where her brother-in-law found her when he came in from church.

Ira D. Sankey’s (1840-1908) melody is now what is used with the words of the Evangelical song, “Tell It Out.”  Sankey’s life is full of adventure.  He served in the American Civil War assisting the chaplain and singing hymns to other soldiers.  Later he worked for the IRS and then began to work with the YMCA.  It was in this position that he became acquainted with Dwight L. Moody and began to work together as an evangelism team.  Moody and Sankey were together the night of The Great Chicago Fire and nearly lost their lives trying to escape it.  Five years before he died, he developed glaucoma and was blinded, which created a closer bond between him and his other fellow hymnist, Fanny Crosby.

“Tell It Out”

Tell it out among the heathen that the Lord is King;

Tell it out! Tell it out!

Tell it out among the nations, bid them shout and sing;

Tell it out! Tell it out!

Tell it out with adoration that He shall increase,

That the mighty King of Glory is the King of Peace;

Tell it out with jubilation, let the song ne’er cease;

Tell it out! Tell it out!

Tell it out among the heathen that the Savior reigns;

Tell it out! Tell it out!

Tell it out among the nations, bid them break their chains;

Tell it out! Tell it out!

Tell it out among the weeping ones that Jesus lives,

Tell it out among the weary ones what rest He gives,

Tell it out among the sinners that He still receives;

Tell it out! Tell it out!

Tell it out among the heathen, Jesus reigns above;

Tell it out! Tell it out!

Tell it out among the nations that His reign is love;

Tell it out! Tell it out!

Tell it out among the highways and the lanes at home,

Let it ring across the mountains and the ocean’s foam,

Like the sound of many waters, let our glad shout come!

Tell it out! Tell it out!

           The hymn “Tell It Out” is among those Evangelical Songs that were sung at the Evangelical Campaigns delivered by Dwight L. Moody and Ira Sankey.
