Dorothy Thrupp is said to have written the words to “Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us” in 1836. Thrupp was born and lived in Middlesex, England. Much of Dorothy Thrupps works was written for children and appeared in hymnals as children’s Gospel music, such as Rev. W. Carus Wilson’s The Children’s Friend and Mrs. Herbert Mayo’s Selection of Hymns and Poetry for the Use of Infant Schools and Nurseries.
William Bradbury wrote the melody to “Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us.” Bradbury was born in Maine but moved to Boston when he was 15. He studied music with Lowell Mason and ten years later became the music director of First Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York. A year later, he became the music director of Baptist Tabernacle in New York where he began to teach and write children’s Gospel music. He then traveled to Europe to study music in singing, piano and harmony. Afterward, he began to compile musical pieces for both children and adults into hymnals.
“Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us”
Savior, like a shepherd lead us, much we need Thy tender care; In Thy pleasant pastures feed us, for our use Thy folds prepare. Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus! Thou hast bought us, Thine we are. Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus! Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.
We are Thine, Thou dost befriend us, be the guardian of our way; Keep Thy flock, from sin defend us, seek us when we go astray. Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus! Hear, O hear us when we pray. Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus! Hear, O hear us when we pray.
Thou hast promised to receive us, poor and sinful though we be; Thou hast mercy to relieve us, grace to cleanse and power to free. Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus! We will early turn to Thee. Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus! We will early turn to Thee.
Early let us seek Thy favor, early let us do Thy will; Blessèd Lord and only Savior, with Thy love our bosoms fill. Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus! Thou hast loved us, love us still. Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus! Thou hast loved us, love us still.
“Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us” has a childlike quality in its poetry in that it is simplistic as well as repetitive, making it easy to remember and repeat without having to read.
