Hymns and gospel songs - stories

"King of Glory, King of Peace"

            George Herbert is known as the lyrical author of  “King of Glory, King Of Peace.”  He went to school at Westminster School and Trinity College at Cambridge, England and became the public orator for the school.  It was his task to give speeches to the school’s visitors and contributors.  King James I heard him and make him one of his ambassadors.  After King James dies, Herbert became ordained and set out on a career as a rector.

       Herbert, also a lyrical author, wrote a book of poetry about his struggles and victories with God.  He gave the unpublished book to a friend to have him deliver it to his brother.  Herbert passed away and the collection was published as The Temple in 1633.

“King of Glory, King of Peace”

King of glory, King of peace,
I will love Thee;
And that love may never cease,
I will move Thee.
Thou hast granted my request,
Thou hast heard me;
Thou didst note my working breast,
Thou hast spared me.

Wherefore with my utmost art
I will sing Thee,
And the cream of all my heart
I will bring Thee.
Though my sins against me cried,
Thou alone didst clear me;
And alone, when they replied,
Thou didst hear me.

Seven whole days, not one in seven,
I will praise Thee;
In my heart, though not in Heaven,
I can raise Thee.
Small it is, in this poor sort
To enroll Thee:
E’en eternity’s too short
To extol Thee.

 Joseph David Jones wrote the musical portions of “ King of Glory, King of Peace.” He spent most of his childhood studying. At age 20, he published Y Perganiedydd (The Sweet Singer).
