Bohemian John Hus (1369-1415) wrote the words to this Christian hymnal “Jesus Christ, Our Blessèd Savior.” Hus moved to Prague as a young boy and managed to get both an B.A. and M.A. After his ordination in 1400, he was the rector for the university for two years. But, his infamy as a reformer caused him to lose his job and be excommunicated from the Church in 1410. Five years later, he was tried for heresy and burned at the stake. “Jesus Christ, Our Blessed Savior” was written just a few months before John Hus was killed.
The words to this reformation hymn, “Jesus Christ, Our Blessed Savior” were set to a piece of music in 1535 known as “Jesus Christus.” It was published in Wittenberg in a Christian hymnal called Geistliche Lieder.

John Hus was a follower of John Wycliffe who endorsed the idea that people should be able to read the Bible in their own language. Not long before his death and writing of “Jesus Christ, our blessèd Savior,” and while he was being burned at the stake, Hus prophesied that within 100 years God would send someone whose reform could not be stopped, and his prophesy came true in that 100 years later, Martin Luther posted his 95 Thesis on the door of the church of Wittenberg.
