Hymns and gospel songs - stories

"Jesus Is Passing This Way"

The famous blind hymnist Fanny Crosby (1820–1915) wrote words to tne Christian melody, “Jesus Is Passing This Way.”  This particular hymn may be one listed under her pseudonym, Annie James.  Fanny Crosby wrote over 8,000 hymns.  When people would in some way feel sorry for her because she was blind, she would tell them that she was quite happy that God had seen fit not to give her sight because she probably would not have created such beautiful music otherwise.

One of “Aunt Fanny’s” friends and colleagues, W. Howard Doane, wrote the Christian melody to “Jesus is Passing This Way.”  Doane was close friends with Ira Sankey and the famous evangelical preacher, Dwight L. Moody.  The blind hymnist, Fanny Crosby, was also affiliated with this group of evangelical ministers.

“Jesus Is Passing This Way”

Is there a heart that is waiting,
Longing for pardon today?
Hear the glad message proclaiming,
Jesus is passing this way.

Refrain

Jesus is passing this way,
This way, today;
Jesus is passing this way,
Is passing this way today.

Is there a heart that has wandered?
Come with thy burden today;
Mercy is tenderly pleading,
Jesus is passing this way.

Refrain

Is there a heart that is broken?
Weary and sighing for rest?
Come to the arms of the Savior,
Pillow thy head on His breast.

Refrain

Come to thy only Redeemer,
Come to His infinite love;
Come to the gate that is leading
Homeward to mansions above.

Refrain

            “Jesus Is Passing This Way,” is a very good hymn for the alter call section of a worship service.  Blind hymnist, Fanny Crosby, was prolific in developing hymns and Christian melodies that would stir the soul.
