Johann Heerman (1585-1647) wrote the words to this Lutheran hymn “Jesus, Grant That Balm and Healing.” Heerman’s mother made a vow to God when he was a small boy and suffered from an illness that Johann would be educated to serve in the church. And so, he graduated from the university with theological training and was ordained. However, he became a university teacher but had to retire from that profession due to an illness. That’s when he turned back to his Lutheran education and became a pastor in Koeben. He served as a pastor whenever there was a break in the Thirty Year’s war. “Jesus, Grant That Balm and Healing” is just one of several hymns that Heerman wrote while in his pastorship at the Lutheran church; it has been translated from German to English.
Johann Balthasar König (1691 – 1758) wrote the melody to this Lutheran hymn “Jesus, Grant That Balm and Healing.” Born in Germany, König studied music with the music director of St. Catherine’s Church. Later, he became the director himself. He was also a vocal teacher.
“Jesus, Grant That Balm and Healing”
Jesus,
grant that balm and healing Should some
lust or sharp temptation If the
world my heart entices Every wound
that pains or grieves me, O my God, my Rock and Tower, It is believed that “Jesus, Grant That Balm and Healing” was published in a German Lutheran hymnal called Harmonischer Lieder-Schatz, oder Allgemeines Evangelischen Choral-Buch, in 1738.
