This ancient hymn, “Jesu! Name all Names Above” dates back to 890 A.D., and is written by the Greek theologian and monk, known as “Theoktistus.” Due to their antiquity, much of Theoktistus’s writings have been lost except for one article in an eight-volume book called Paracletice or Great Octoechus. The article is actually named “Suppliant Canon to Jesus” in Greek. John M. Neale translated it into English in 1862 when he gathered works to be published in his Hymns of the Eastern Church.
Frederick Arthur Gore-Ouseley set the ancient hymn, “Jesu! Name all Names Above” to music in 1882 for the musical publication of John M. Neale’s Hymns of the Eastern Church under the title “Theoktistus.”
“Jesu! Name all Names Above ”
Jesu! Name
all names above, Jesu, open
me the gate, Jesu,
crowned with thorns for me, When I reach death’s bitter sea,
It is interesting to note that even ancient hymns such as “Jesu! Name all Names Above” still show the same kind of Jesus that Modern Christianity still describes: “Jesu, crowned with thorns for me, Scourged for my transgression.”
