Composer Frances Ridley Havergal (1836-1879) wrote “I Am Trusting Thee, Lord, Jesus” in 1874. The words were published in Loyal Responses in 1878. She was the daughter of the English hymnist and composer, William Havergal. She was apparently a very bright young woman, reading at the age of four and writing poetry at seven. When she died, she was found with the words to “I Am Trusting Thee, Lord, Jesus” in her pocket. It was apparently her favorite hymn.
Ethelbert W. Bulliger (1837-1913) set the words of “I Am Trusting Thee, Lord, Jesus” to music in the same year Havergal wrote it. He was a chorister at Canterbury Cathedral. He received an Honorary D.D. from the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1881. To become a composer, he studied music under the famous William Monk, the first musical editor of Hymns Ancient and Modern,which survived several editions and sold over 60 million copies.
“I Am Trusting Thee, Lord, Jesus”
I am
trusting Thee, Lord, Jesus, I am
trusting Thee for pardon; I am
trusting Thee for cleansing I am
trusting Thee to guide me; I am
trusting Thee for power, I am
trusting Thee, Lord Jesus;
Both composers of “I Am Trusting Thee, Lord, Jesus” were avid students of Latin, Greek, Hebrew and the Bible.
