Palmer Hartsough (1844-1932) wrote “I Am Resolved” to be published in The Praise Hymnal of 1896. Hartsough went to Kalamazoo College, and then to Michigan State Normal. He taught music and singing as he traveled in the Mid-West and Southern states. In 1893, he became a member of the Fillmore Music Company, in Cincinnati, as well as a music director two religious organizations there. It was at this time of his life that he wrote hymns such as “I Am Resolved.” Eventually, he became an ordained Baptist minister, pastoring in Ontario, Michigan.]
James H. Fillmore, Sr. (1849–1936) originally wrote the music to “I Am Resolved” with different words to be used in a San Francisco singing Convention. Later, he asked Hartsough to write the words we see today because he wanted something that could be used at more functions.

Fillmore began his life as a hymn composer of such songs as “I Am Resolved” at the young age of 16. In fact, he did so well with his music that he was able to support his family with his work. His brothers founded the famous Fillmore Music House in Cincinnati, along with him.
