The lyrics for “I am Jesus’ Little Lamb” were written by Henriette L. von Hayn (1724-1782). Hayn was born in German and became a nun, apparently of the Moravian community. She wrote over 40 hymns, including the hymn “I am Jesus’ Little Lamb” which was published in the Brüder Gesangbuch, 1778 (Weil ich Jesu Schäflein bin). The text of these hymns has been translated to English from German.
“Weil Ich Jesu Schäflein Bin,” is the melody for the hymn “I am Jesus’ Little Lamb.” It was published in Brüder Choral-Buch, 1784 apparently anonymously.
“I am Jesus’ Little Lamb”
I am Jesus’
little lamb, Day by day,
at home, away, Who so
happy as I am,
“I am Jesus’ Little Lamb” is a happy hymn that could be easily taught to little children because of its simple and easy message about how Jesus takes care of his children like a shepherd takes care of his lambs.
