George W. Robinson (1838--1877 ) wrote the words to the hymn “I Am His, and He is Mine” in 1876. Its melody is lively and upbeat. Born in Ireland, Robinson was educated at Dublin’s Trinity College, and later at New College in London. Later he became a pastor in Dudley.
The melody of “I am His, and He is Mine” was written under the name “Everlasting Love” by James Mountain in 1876. The melody of this hymn was written because the composer was about to publish a first edition of his hymnal, Hymns of Consecration and Faith. He took the words of Robinson’s hymn.
“I Am His, and He is Mine”
Loved with
everlasting love, led by grace that love to know; Heav’n
above is softer blue, Earth around is sweeter green! Things that
once were wild alarms cannot now disturb my rest; His
forever, only His; Who the Lord and me shall part?
After his education composer, James Mountain became pastor at Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire, but he fell to ill health and left his pastorship. Later, he did evangelism tours in Britain (1874-1882) and worldwide (1882-1889) and he also published hymnals. He published “I Am His, and He is Mine” in 1876. His melody endures even until this day.
