"Child Of The King"

Child of the King

     The words for “Child Of The King” were written by Harriett Buell (1834-1910); the musical score was written earlier.  One Sunday morning, Harriet was walking home from church services at her Methodist church.  The words for “Child Of The King”came to her that afternoon.  She wrote them down and later sent her text to the Northern Christian Advocate.   “Child Of The King”was printed in the February 1, 1877 issue of that publication as a poem.  The musical score was added as the result of an answered prayer.

     John Summer had been praying for lyrics to a religious song for an unfinished musical score written by his dear friend, Philip Bliss.  Mr. Bliss had suddenly died and Summer thought his work should be published.  When Summer read the words to “Child Of The King,” he instantly knew that the two works should be joined together.

Child Of The King

(1) My Father is rich in houses and lands,

He holdeth the wealth of the world in His hands!

Of rubies and diamonds, of silver and gold,

His coffers are full,—He has riches untold.

Chorus: I’m a child of the King,

A child of the King!

With Jesus, my Savior,

I’m a child of the King.

(2) My Father’s own Son, the Savior of men,

Once wandered o’er earth as the poorest of them;

But now He is reigning in glory on high,

Preparing a place for the sweet by and by.

(3) A tent or a cottage, why should I care?

They’re building a palace for me over there!

Though here I’m a stranger yet still I may sing;

All glory to God, I’m a child of the King!

     In the book of Romans, Paul tells us that how precious we are to God.   “We are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ… Romans 8:16-17.  “ Child of The King” reminds us of His great love for us and the musical score only reaffirms.
