Hymns and gospel songs - stories

"A Safe Stronghold Our God is Still"

“A Safe Stronghold Our God is Still” is one of the popular songs by Martin Luther, the “father of the Protestant Church.”  Martin Luther wrote both the words and music to His infamous 99 theses attached to the doors of the church for all to see in 1517, Martin Luther continued his career as a priest even after he was excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church.  Those who followed him became known as Lutherans.

Much about the Protestant church we still attribute to Luther, even today.  His belief that the Bible should be translated into German, his home language, so that the common man could read it for himself was considered to be a form of heresy at that time in history.  And his questioning of various religious practices of the Roman Catholic church, such as buying indulgences so that those in purgatory would be able to enter heaven, created great turmoil for many among the clergy.  The many songs by martin Luther are still used today.

“A Safe Stronghold Our God is Still”

A safe stronghold our God is still,

A trusty shield and weapon;

He’ll help us clear from all the ill

That hath us now o’ertaken.

The ancient prince of hell

Hath risen with purpose fell;

Strong mail of craft and power

He weareth in this hour;

On earth is not his fellow.

With force of arms we nothing can,

Full soon were we down-ridden;

But for us fights the proper Man,

Whom God Himself hath bidden.

Ask ye, Who is this same?

Christ Jesus is His Name,

The Lord Sabaoth’s Son;

He, and no other one,

Shall conquer in the battle.

And were this world all devils o’er,

And watching to devour us,

We lay it not to heart so sore;

Not they can overpower us.

And let the prince of ill

Look grim as e’er he will,

He harms us not a whit;

For why? — his doom is writ;

A word shall quickly slay him.

God’s Word, for all their craft and force,

One moment will not linger,

But, spite of hell, shall have its course;

’Tis written by His finger.

And though they take our life,

Goods, honor, children, wife,

Yet is their profit small;

These things shall vanish all:

The City of God remaineth!

Most of all, “A Safe Stronghold Our God is Still” speaks of Martin Luther’s belief that there is only one way into heaven and this is through belief in Jesus as the Christ.  Thomas Carlyle is the translator of this tune into English.
